New Jersey Monthly has named South Amboy one of the top 100 places to live in the Garden State and the top city to live in Middlesex County.

Raritan Riverkeeper Bill Schultz recently reported that he has spotted osprey nests scattered along the river in the South Amboy area. The fishing-eating bird of prey has returned to the region, marking a trend of wildlife making its way back to the county.

From South Amboy´s baseball fields came some of baseball’s notable figures. Famous residents include Jack McKeon (born Nov. 23, 1930), manager of the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins, and former Yankee Allie Clarke (born June 16, 1923), who played on the 1947 squad with Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra. The O´Brien brothers, twins John and Ed, also played in the Major Leagues in the ´50s. The pair hit a major league baseball milestone during their time together on the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming the first twins in the league´s history to play for the same team in the same game.

In 1981, South Amboy won the distinction of having more bars per capita than any other city in the United States. According to the Rand McNally "Places Rated Almanac," the 1.8-square-mile city was home to 37 taverns. As part of the revitalization effort, city officials have drastically reduced that number.

South Amboy wasn´t always a small hamlet. In the 1800s, the city was 18 miles long and 6 miles wide and included the land that is now Sayreville, Old Bridge, Monroe, Jamesburg and Cranbury. Gradually, those municipalities broke away from South Amboy in the mid-1800s.
